Executive Summary
If you’ve been living in Hungary for a few years and want to stop worrying about renewing temporary permits after a years, the Hungarian National Residence Card might just be your golden ticket. We’ve walked a ton of clients through this stage of their journey, and honestly, it’s one of the more straightforward long-term permits available in the EU.
It’s designed for non-EU nationals (also called “third-country” nationals in immigration speak) who’ve already built a stable life in Hungary. If you’ve legally lived here for at least three years, or even just one year if you’ve been living in marriage with a Hungarian citizen or someone who already has permanent residency, you could qualify.
This card gives you broad work rights, access to Hungary’s healthcare and social systems, and unrestricted travel across the Schengen Zone. It’s not automatic citizenship, but it lays down solid roots for it. And once you’ve got it, the stress of short-term visas is mostly behind you.
Who Can Apply for the National Residence Card?
Let’s break it down, there are two main ways to qualify:
- You’ve legally lived in Hungary for 3 continuous years. That means uninterrupted legal stay on valid residence permits.
- You’ve cohabited in Hungary with a Hungarian citizen or someone holding permanent residency for at least 1 year. This can be as a spouse, registered partner, but it needs to be official and well-documented. A casual relationship won’t fly with immigration.
But here’s the kicker, meeting the time requirement is just the start.
You’ll also need to prove:
- You’ve got stable income (we’re talking pay slips, contracts, or even tax returns if you’re self-employed)
- Health insurance coverage within Hungary (public or private, either works if valid)
- Suitable accommodation (rental agreement or ownership papers, and yes, they sometimes do home visits)
- A clean criminal record, both in Hungary and in your home country
We had a client who forgot to get a newly updated police certificate from their country of origin, and their application sat in limbo for weeks. Lesson learned: don’t skip that one.
What Rights Does the Card Provide?
This is where things get good.
Live and Work Freely in Hungary
No more employer sponsorship headaches. Once you have this card, you can work anywhere, full-time job, part-time, freelance, start your own gig. No separate work permit needed. It’s total flexibility, and it’s why a lot of our clients see this as a career unlock.
We’ve seen some people even use this to transition from employment to entrepreneurship, which is way harder under temporary permits.
Schengen Travel
You can travel around the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a separate visa. Super handy for business trips or quick getaways, especially now that border control is getting stricter post-Brexit.
Healthcare and Social Services
You’re officially part of the system now. That means access to public healthcare (once registered properly), and depending on your circumstances, access to social programs like family benefits or housing support. It’s not a free-for-all, you still have to qualify under national rules, but this card makes you eligible.
Counts Toward Citizenship
If citizenship is your endgame, you’re on the right path. Time spent under the National Residence Card counts toward the 8-year requirement for Hungarian citizenship.
We usually recommend clients start looking into language prep around year five. The language test is no joke, conversational fluency with basic writing is expected, and most people underestimate how hard it is until they’re staring at the exam.

Family Reunification: What to Know
Family reunification is possible, and common, but like we always tell people: it’s not automatic. Every family member needs to file their own application under the family unification permit process.
That means:
- You’ll need to prove the relationship (marriage certificates, birth records, all translated and legalized)
- You must show enough income and space to support everyone
- Accommodation proof becomes even more scrutinized if you’re bringing kids
Important note: only spouses, minor children, and dependent family members qualify.
Validity, Renewal, and Limitations
Card Duration
The National Residence Card is valid for 10 years and it can be renewable for other 10 years.. That’s a huge relief for most, it gives you breathing room to settle in and plan longer-term moves without constantly juggling visa renewals.
Renewal
You can renew as long as you still meet all the original conditions, stable income, accommodation, health coverage, clean legal record. Nothing fancy here, just stay in good standing.
But, and this is key, apply before your card expires. The system doesn’t send out reminder emails, and if your permit lapses, you might need to restart the process with more paperwork and fewer rights. We always set a Google Calendar reminder 6 months out just to be safe.
Losing Your PR Status
You may lose the card if the conditions that served as the basis for its issuance have changed so significantly that they would now exclude the granting of the permit or the card, provided that five years have not yet passed since its issuance.
You can lose your National Residence Card if:
- You’re outside Hungary for more than 6 months consecutively, or
- In the case of a permit or card issued based on family ties, the marriage has not ended due to the death of the spouse within three years of receiving the permit or card, or the third-country national’s parental custody rights have not been terminated, unless the third-country national has been residing in Hungary for four years with long-term residence status or as an immigrant.
This one catches people off guard, especially freelancers or digital nomads. Just because you can travel doesn’t mean you should vanish for a year. They do track border crossings, so don’t try to game the system.
You also lose status if you commit a serious crime, or just fail to renew. It’s not a forever-pass unless you maintain it.
How to Apply
Where to Submit
You’ve got two options:
- Online via the EnterHungary portal, recommended if you’re tech-savvy and already in Hungary
- In person at an NDGAP regional office, works better for folks who need help navigating the platform or have complex cases
Pro tip: even if you’re applying online, have all your docs in PDF format under 2MB. The system has a weird file size limit and doesn’t always tell you why uploads fail.
Documents Required
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Valid passport
- Proof of legal residence (3 years, or 1 year with cohabiting partner)
- Income documentation (employment contract, payslips, tax returns)
- Health insurance certificate
- Proof of accommodation
- Criminal background certificate (from Hungary and your country of origin)
Some extras may be requested if your case is unusual, for example, if you’ve switched permits multiple times or had any gaps in residence. We always advise clients to prep an explanatory letter if they’ve had complicated permit history.
Processing Time
There’s no guaranteed timeline, it’s Hungary, after all, but we typically see decisions in 90–120 days. That can stretch to longer if your case needs extra verification, or if you’re applying during summer (when NDGAP slows down significantly).
